Serving Chamber Music

Founded in 1976, the Leipzig Bach Collegium is the oldest ensemble created by Güttler. In this orchestra, the trumpet and the corno da caccia’s virtuosity is put into the service of the chamber music. Right from the beginning, the ensemble’s endeavour was to recreate the historic orchestral sound and tone colour using today’s conventional instruments. The ensemble’s repertoire focuses on the Johann Sebastian Bach period but also takes up compositions from the Early Classic period. The focus is hereby mainly on heritage consigned to oblivion dating from that period. The Bach Collegium – in its habitual instrumentation comprising trumpet/ corno da caccia, flute, oboe/ oboe d‘amore, violin, violoncello, string bass, harpsichord; and if possible vocals – aspires to demonstrate that and how music stemming from that period signified the “freedom of the playing mind”.
